What is diabetes?
Affecting an estimated 26 million Americans, diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that causes a person to have high blood sugar, either because the body cannot produce enough insulin or because the body is not responding to the insulin that is present. There are two main types. That rarer Type 1 causes the body's own immune system to destroy the pancreas’ insulin-producing cells. Type 2, accounting for about 90% of cases, is when insulin is present but at deficient levels.
What are the symptoms?
- Excessive thirst and appetite
- Frequent urination
- Weight fluctuation
- Fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Slow healing
Diagnosis
A fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test is the most common method for diagnosing diabetes. It’s a rather simple an inexpensive process. Patients are asked to fast between 4-8 hours and then offer as little as one drop of blood. Average blood sugar is between 70-100 mg/dL, but the threshold for diagnosis is usually 126mg/dL confirmed in two separate tests.
Treatment
Diabetes is a complex disease that requires vigilant management. Blood sugar levels are often monitored throughout the day with a simple stick test. Insulin injections and some oral medications allow for manipulation of those levels. For patients with Type 2, lifestyle changes like exercise and adopting a healthy diet can go a long way toward reversing effects of the disease.
For questions about diabetes, including symptoms you may be experiencing, always consult your primary care physician.
